Iranian Foreign Minister Condemns Western Double Standards in Global Conflicts
Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has launched a scathing critique of what he describes as the collapse of international law in practice, accusing Western nations of applying double standards in conflicts ranging from Gaza to Ukraine. In a post on social media platform X, Araghchi highlighted what he termed as silence over aggression by Israel and the United States against Iran, while acknowledging German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's condemnation of violations against Iranians as a rare and commendable stance.
International Law Under Fire: Accusations of Hypocrisy
Araghchi stated, "International law is dead in practice—driven by Western double standards on Gaza vs. Ukraine and silence on Israel-US aggression on Iran." He further added, "Still, credit to President Steinmeier for condemning the violations against Iranians. Those who value the rule of law should also speak up." This statement underscores Iran's growing frustration with perceived inconsistencies in global diplomatic responses to conflicts.
German President's Remarks on US-Israeli Actions
According to reports from German news platform DW, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the re-establishment of the German Foreign Ministry, labeled the US-Israeli attacks on Iran as "a violation of international law." This rare public criticism from a Western leader has been welcomed by Iranian officials, who see it as a break from the usual silence or support for such actions.
Russian Support and Regional Concerns
Earlier, on March 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed the discussion in a post on X, noting that the ministers addressed the deterioration in the Persian Gulf caused by US-Israeli aggression. They also expressed concern over the conflict's dangerous expansion into the Caspian region.
Lavrov emphasized the categorical unacceptability of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. He warned that such actions create unacceptable risks for the safety of Russian personnel and could lead to catastrophic environmental consequences for all countries in the region without exception.
US President's Comments on the Conflict
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed victory in the conflict, stating that Iran's military capabilities have been severely degraded. Speaking at the Swearing-In Ceremony for the Secretary of Homeland Security, Trump said, "We're in negotiations right now. I can tell you, they'd like to make a deal and who wouldn't if you were there? Look, their navy's gone, their air force is gone, their communications are gone. Pretty much everything they have is gone." These remarks highlight the ongoing tensions and the US's assertive stance in the region.
Implications for Global Diplomacy
The exchange of statements between Iranian, German, Russian, and US officials underscores the deepening divisions in international relations. Iran's criticism of double standards reflects broader debates about the application of international law and the role of Western powers in global conflicts. As diplomatic tensions escalate, the need for consistent and principled approaches to conflict resolution becomes increasingly urgent.
