Iran-US Peace Talks Collapse Over Alleged Framework Deviation
Abdul Majeed Hakeem Ilahi, the special representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in India, declared on Saturday that recent efforts to advance peace negotiations between Iran and the United States have ended in failure. Speaking at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow while en route to Delhi, Ilahi attributed the breakdown to Washington allegedly deviating from a previously accepted framework for dialogue.
10-Point Plan Initially Accepted, Then Abandoned
According to Ilahi, Iran had earlier proposed a comprehensive 10-point plan to serve as the foundation for negotiations with the United States. He stated that this proposal was initially accepted by the US side, creating a basis for potential diplomatic progress. "We offered a 10-point plan to the United States to be the base of negotiation and it was accepted by them. They were supposed to come and negotiate based on this plan," Ilahi explained during his remarks at the airport.
However, the Iranian envoy claimed that when actual talks commenced, the United States shifted its position significantly. "When they came to Pakistan and started negotiations, they began demanding something else and refused to negotiate based on the 10-point plan. So, the negotiation failed," Ilahi added, highlighting what he described as a fundamental disagreement over the negotiation framework.
Future Dialogue Remains Possible Despite Current Stalemate
Despite the current impasse, Ilahi indicated that diplomatic channels have not been completely severed. He revealed that Iran has since received another proposal from the United States, suggesting that dialogue between the two nations may resume in the future. "Maybe they will negotiate later, but till now there has been no achievement from those negotiations," Ilahi noted, emphasizing the lack of concrete progress thus far.
The Iranian envoy's comments come during a visit to Uttar Pradesh, where he had earlier traveled to Sultanpur district before arriving in Lucknow. His statements provide insight into the ongoing challenges in Iran-US relations, which have been marked by tensions over nuclear programs, regional security, and economic sanctions.
