IUML MPs Meet Jaishankar, Demand Safety for Indians in Gulf Amid Conflict
In a significant development, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Members of Parliament met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Tuesday. The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum urging the Union government to implement immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of Indian citizens residing in the Gulf region.
Escalating Middle East Tensions Prompt Urgent Appeal
The MPs highlighted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly involving the US, Israel, and Iran, has intensified dramatically. They expressed grave concern over reports of large-scale airstrikes targeting strategic locations in Iran, including nuclear facilities, military bases, and critical oil infrastructure. This volatile situation is adversely affecting Gulf countries, where a substantial Indian expatriate community lives and works.
The memorandum was formally presented by IUML MPs E T Mohammed Basheer, M P Abdussamad Samadani, P V Abdul Wahab, and Harris Beeran. They emphasized that nearly one crore Indian citizens in the Gulf are facing increasing uncertainty and potential danger due to the conflict.
Specific Concerns Raised by the Delegation
- Safety of Expatriates: The MPs noted that Indian workers and students in the region are particularly vulnerable, with their safety compromised by the escalating hostilities.
- Travel Disruptions: Restrictions on air traffic at major international hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have created significant difficulties, hindering movement and causing logistical nightmares.
- Stranded Citizens: There are alarming reports of some Indian citizens being stranded in Iran, unable to return home due to the conflict's impact on transportation and security.
Call for Diplomatic Intervention and Evacuation Plans
Invoking India's longstanding foreign policy principles, the MPs stated, "India traditionally follows the principles of peaceful coexistence and dialogue-based conflict resolution, based on its long-standing foreign policy of the non-aligned movement and the Panchsheel principles." They urged the Union government to leverage this diplomatic stance to take urgent action.
- Immediate Safety Measures: Implement steps to protect Indian citizens in conflict-affected areas, including enhanced consular support and emergency protocols.
- Evacuation Preparedness: If necessary, organize and execute evacuation plans to safely bring Indians home from war zones.
- Diplomatic Efforts: Engage in strong diplomatic intervention to help restore peace and stability in the Middle East, leveraging India's global standing.
The meeting underscores the growing anxiety among Indian communities abroad and the political pressure on the government to address these critical international concerns proactively.
