Wildlife Encounter at Surat Airport: Jackal Struck by Landing Aircraft
A potentially dangerous situation was successfully managed at Surat International Airport when an incoming aircraft reportedly collided with a jackal during its landing procedure. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of April 8, involving an Indigo Airlines flight that had originated from Hyderabad and was arriving at approximately 8:00 AM.
Immediate Response and Safety Protocols
Airport authorities confirmed that the jackal's relatively small size prevented any significant impact on the aircraft's structure or systems. Following established safety protocols, the plane was directed to the apron where it underwent a comprehensive inspection by qualified technicians. The examination revealed no damage to the aircraft, confirming it remained fully airworthy for subsequent operations.
A senior airport official provided additional context: "The incident occurred during the landing phase. We conducted a thorough inspection as per standard operating procedures and found no damage to the aircraft. This particular aircraft typically operates a Dubai-bound service from Surat after arriving from Hyderabad. However, due to the ongoing conflict in Iran region, the Dubai service was not scheduled for that specific day, allowing the aircraft to depart for its next destination later that evening."
Wildlife Management Challenges
The collision proved fatal for the jackal, whose remains were subsequently transferred to forest department officials for proper handling. This incident has highlighted ongoing challenges with wildlife intrusion at the airport facility.
Forest department sources explained their persistent efforts: "We had been informed by airport authorities about multiple jackals straying near the runway area. For several months prior to this incident, we had installed specialized cages in strategic locations. However, jackals demonstrate considerable intelligence and have proven difficult to trap using conventional methods. We have attempted various approaches without achieving consistent success. We suspect at least one additional jackal may still be present within the airport compound."
Historical Context of Wildlife Presence
The region surrounding Surat airport has traditionally served as natural habitat for jackal populations, who find ample food sources including fish, birds, and smaller animals in the vicinity. Previously, a drainage channel running adjacent to the airport perimeter wall provided convenient access for wildlife entering the premises. Authorities addressed this vulnerability several months ago by installing iron grills to seal the opening, but this modification may have inadvertently trapped some animals inside the airport boundaries. The jackal involved in the recent aircraft incident is believed to have been among those confined within the secured area.
Airport and wildlife officials continue to collaborate on developing more effective strategies to prevent similar incidents, balancing aviation safety requirements with wildlife conservation considerations in this urban-adjacent environment.
