External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Foreign Minister Anita Anand, during the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meet held in Paris, France. The discussions centered on enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Canada, with a particular focus on expanding cooperation in critical sectors such as trade, critical minerals, agriculture, and education.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Addressing Global Issues

According to a post on X by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, the leaders followed up on the momentum generated by the recent visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to India. "We discussed trade, the situation in the Middle East, and key areas where we can deepen cooperation, including critical minerals, agriculture, and education," Anand stated. This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to bolster economic and diplomatic relations between the two nations, leveraging shared interests in resource security and educational exchanges.

In addition to bilateral matters, the conversation also addressed the escalating situation in West Asia, reflecting mutual concerns over regional stability and its broader global implications. The leaders emphasized the need for diplomatic initiatives to mitigate tensions and promote peace in the conflict-ridden area.

Jaishankar's Engagements with German Counterpart and G7 Sessions

Parallel to the meeting with Anand, EAM Jaishankar also held talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. In a separate post on X, Wadephul highlighted the strong partnership between India and Germany, noting, "We are both concerned about the situation in the Middle East and its global implications and exchanged on ways for diplomatic initiatives." This interaction further illustrates India's active role in engaging with key global partners to address pressing international crises.

During the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting session with invited partners, Jaishankar delivered remarks on the reform of global governance. He stressed the urgency of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, streamlining peacekeeping operations, and strengthening humanitarian supply chains. Specifically, he raised concerns from the Global South regarding energy challenges, fertilizer supplies, and food security, advocating for more inclusive and resilient global systems.

Advocating for Resilient Trade Corridors Amidst Conflicts

In the second session of the G7 meeting, Jaishankar shared perspectives on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). He argued that the uncertainties arising from conflicts in West Asia reinforce the necessity for more resilient trade corridors and supply chains. This stance aligns with India's broader strategy to enhance economic connectivity and stability in the face of geopolitical disruptions.

The discussions at the G7 summit highlight India's proactive diplomacy in fostering bilateral ties with countries like Canada and Germany, while also contributing to global dialogues on governance, security, and economic resilience. As tensions in West Asia continue to evolve, such multilateral engagements are crucial for shaping collaborative responses and advancing shared interests in a complex international landscape.
