Jaishankar Champions Direct Dialogue with Iran for Maritime Security in Strait of Hormuz
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has emphasized that direct diplomatic engagement with Tehran is the most effective approach for ensuring the safe passage of Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic move aims to safeguard India's energy security as tensions escalate in the Middle East region.
In an exclusive interview with the Financial Times UK, Jaishankar revealed that New Delhi is actively negotiating with Iran to reopen this critical maritime corridor, which facilitates approximately 20 percent of the world's oil trade. He noted that these discussions are "already yielding some results," underscoring the value of reasoning and coordination over disengagement.
Practical Successes and Ongoing Efforts
The Minister highlighted the recent transit of two Indian-flagged vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, as a tangible outcome of this diplomatic strategy. These tankers, carrying around 92,712 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), are currently en route to the Indian ports of Mundra and Kandla.
However, Jaishankar clarified that a formal "blanket arrangement" for all Indian-flagged ships has not yet been established. Instead, vessel transits are being managed on a case-by-case basis, reflecting the nuanced nature of the ongoing negotiations.

These remarks come in the wake of warnings from US President Donald Trump, who has called for international allies, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain, to deploy naval assets to protect the shipping route. He mentioned that while India is open to sharing its experiences with European nations, each country's relationship with Iran is shaped by its own specific context and diplomatic priorities.

In a related incident, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that the Indian-flagged tanker Jag Laadki departed from Fujairah on Sunday. The vessel, carrying 80,800 metric tonnes of Murban crude, had been loading at a facility when the terminal was targeted in an attack, highlighting the persistent risks in the region.
