EAM Jaishankar Engages in Key Diplomatic Meetings to Strengthen International Partnerships
In a series of significant diplomatic engagements, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held separate meetings on Friday with the High Commissioner of Bangladesh and the Ambassador of Kazakhstan in New Delhi. These discussions were centered on bolstering bilateral relations and enhancing cooperative efforts between India and these key nations.
Deepening Ties with Bangladesh
Minister Jaishankar met with Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, where the leaders explored avenues to further deepen the longstanding ties between the two neighboring countries. In a post on X, Jaishankar emphasized that their conversation was "focused on advancing our bilateral ties."
High Commissioner Hamidullah expressed his privilege in paying a courtesy call on the minister, reaffirming Dhaka's commitment to collaboration with New Delhi. He stated, "Privileged to pay Courtesy Call on the Indian EAM and affirmed Bangladesh's readiness to walk | work with India, together, in shared interests and for shared benefits."
Advancing Partnership with Kazakhstan
In a separate meeting, Jaishankar received the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to India, Azamat Yeskarayev. The discussions focused on advancing the strategic partnership between India and Kazakhstan. Jaishankar noted in another X post, "Received Kazakh Ambassador to India Azamat Yeskarayev this morning. Discussed taking forward our partnership."
Recent Developments in India-Bangladesh Relations
These meetings come on the heels of recent high-level talks between India and Bangladesh. On March 16, discussions were held regarding the review of the Line of Credit (LOC) and Bangladesh's potential participation in India's power exchange market. Additionally, both nations explored how Bangladesh could gain insights from India's digital financial system.
High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Adviser in the Prime Minister's Office of Bangladesh. Their dialogue covered various aspects of economic cooperation, including:
- Strengthening transport, energy, and digital connectivity
- Exploring new areas for future collaboration in people-centric domains
- Aligning efforts with mutual developmental priorities and benefits
Energy Cooperation Highlights
In a related development, an official confirmed on March 15 that Bangladesh will import an additional 45,000 tons of diesel from India by April. Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, provided details:
- Recently, 5,000 tons of diesel arrived in Bangladesh from India
- Another 5,000 tons are expected around March 18 or 19
- A proposal for importing an additional 40,000 tons is underway, with arrival anticipated by April once procedural formalities are completed
