Former Ambassador Jawed Ashraf Awarded France's Legion d'honneur Commandeur Rank
In a distinguished ceremony held in New Delhi, former Indian ambassador and chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), Jawed Ashraf, was conferred the rank of Commandeur in France's prestigious Legion d'honneur. This honour, presented by Thierry Mathou, the Ambassador of France to India, marks the third-highest distinction within the French national award system.
A Historic Honour for Indian Diplomacy
Jawed Ashraf expressed his profound gratitude, stating that being awarded the Commandeur of the Legion of Honour is a significant honour. He highlighted that he is now the eighth Indian to receive this recognition, joining an elite group that includes industrialist JRD Tata, economist Professor Amartya Sen, musician Pandit Ravi Shankar, filmmaker Satyajit Ray, singer Manna Dey, and painter SH Raza.
"It's certainly a great honour to be conferred with the insignia of the Commandeur of the Legion of Honour by the French Republic," Ashraf remarked. "It is particularly special because I'm the eighth Indian to receive this honour after such illustrious personalities."
Reflection of Strong Bilateral Ties
Ashraf interpreted the award as a testament to France's high regard for diplomatic efforts and its deepening relationship with India. He emphasised that this honour underscores the value France places on its strategic partnership with India, which has seen remarkable progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron.
"I see this as a reflection of the great esteem in which the French government and people of France hold this craft of diplomacy," he added. "The enormous value and importance that they attach to relations with India, the respect they have for the strategic partnership, and the tribute to the extraordinary progress that we have seen in the strategic partnership under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron."
Background and Significance of the Award
The Legion d'honneur, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is France's premier national award, designed to recognise outstanding service and contributions across various fields. The rank of Commandeur is one of its highest honours, reserved for individuals who have made exceptional achievements in their respective domains.
Jawed Ashraf has an extensive diplomatic career, having served as India's Ambassador to France, Singapore, and in the Americas division of the Ministry of External Affairs. His contributions to fostering international relations have been widely acknowledged.
Context of Indo-French Relations
This award comes amidst ongoing high-level engagements between India and France. Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held discussions with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on the West Asia crisis, highlighting the collaborative approach to global issues.
In February, a significant milestone was achieved with the launch of the India-France Year of Innovation 2026, inaugurated jointly by President Macron and Prime Minister Modi in Mumbai. This initiative, marked by a delegation of 23 innovative French companies visiting India, focuses on key areas such as aerospace, health, sustainable development, and cultural industries, further strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The ceremony was attended by India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, underscoring the importance of this diplomatic event. The Legion d'honneur award to Jawed Ashraf not only honours his personal achievements but also symbolises the robust and evolving partnership between India and France, paving the way for future collaborations in innovation and strategic endeavours.
