Kolhapur Advocates for New Railway Line to Enhance Regional Connectivity

A significant demand for the establishment of a separate Karad-Kolhapur-Belagavi railway line was formally presented to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a commemorative event held at Kolhapur railway station on Tuesday. The occasion marked the 135th anniversary of the historic Kolhapur-Miraj railway line, celebrating over a century of rail service in the region.

Event Highlights Longstanding Railway Infrastructure Issues

The program was organized by the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Pravasi Sangh and the Kolhapur Railway Passengers Association, with former MLA Malojiraje Chhatrapati presiding over the proceedings. In addition to the call for the new line, speakers at the event brought attention to the persistently unresolved issue of track doubling on the Miraj-Kolhapur route. They expressed frustration that this critical infrastructure project remains unrealized even after 135 years, describing it as a distant dream that continues to hinder regional development.

Historical Vision and Modern Transport Needs

Addressing the gathering, Malojiraje Chhatrapati reflected on the visionary decision by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj to extend the railway line to Kolhapur, emphasizing its people-centric nature. "Despite Kolhapur's geographical location off the main north-south railway corridor, the rail line was successfully brought here. The spade used by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj during the groundbreaking ceremony is still preserved in the Palace Museum, symbolizing this historic achievement," he stated.

He further elaborated on the evolving transport landscape, noting that while Kolhapur has witnessed advancements in sectors such as information technology, aviation, and air connectivity, railways remain the primary mode of transport for the common man. "A separate Karad-Kolhapur-Belagavi line would dramatically reduce the distance between Pune and Bengaluru, which currently necessitates a longer and less efficient route via Miraj. This new corridor would not only save travel time but also boost economic and social ties across the region," he explained.

Ongoing Railway Initiatives and Future Prospects

Malojiraje Chhatrapati also provided updates on other railway projects in the pipeline. "Efforts are actively underway for the Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi rail link, and improvement work at Kolhapur railway station has already commenced. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to modernize rail infrastructure and enhance passenger experience," he added.

Members of the passenger association reinforced the urgency of infrastructure upgrades, stressing that track doubling and other enhancements are essential if Kolhapur is to be considered fully developed from a transport perspective. They argued that without these improvements, the region's growth potential remains constrained, affecting both local commuters and long-distance travelers.
