Laser Beam Projection Disrupts Aircraft Landing at Kolhapur Airport

In a concerning incident at Kolhapur airport, a private airline pilot struggled with vision obstruction due to laser beam projections on Tuesday night, just as the aircraft was preparing to land. The flight, carrying 69 passengers from New Mumbai to Kolhapur, encountered the interference at approximately 8:25 PM, marking the second such reported occurrence in less than a month.

Details of the Incident and Immediate Response

According to Kolhapur airport director Anil Shinde, the plane was in its final approach for landing when laser beams projected from the ground into the sky severely obstructed the pilot's focus and vision. Preliminary investigations suggest the source was located about 15 kilometers to the northwest of the airport. Despite the disruption, the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely, ensuring no harm to passengers or crew.

Shinde emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "We have informed the district administration about the incident, seeking required action to prevent such risks to air passenger safety." He further highlighted the need for public awareness, noting that such laser projections can lead to untoward incidents and jeopardize aviation safety.

Authorities Take Action and Previous Similar Cases

Gajanan Gurav, the resident district collector, responded promptly by directing the police to identify the source of the laser beams and ensure they are not used within the airport's funnel zone. However, as of now, the police have yet to trace the exact origin of the projections.

This event follows a similar incident reported earlier, where a pilot on a flight from Ahmedabad to Belagavi also experienced laser beam interference. The recurrence underscores a growing concern for aviation safety in the region, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and preventive measures.

Call for Prohibitive Measures and Ongoing Investigations

Airport authorities are planning to request district officials to implement prohibitive measures to avoid future occurrences. Shinde added, "We are going to request district authorities to implement prohibitive measures to avoid such instances from happening. People should be aware that such laser beam projections may cause untoward incidents, and risk air passenger safety."

The investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on locating the source and enhancing regulatory frameworks to protect against such hazards. This incident highlights the critical need for vigilance and cooperation between aviation and local authorities to safeguard air travel.
