Lucknow's River Conservation Champion to Represent City at Republic Day Celebrations
In a proud moment for Lucknow, Shivang Verma, the city's project officer with the district Ganga committee, has been chosen as a special guest for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. This prestigious invitation comes as a recognition of his sustained and impactful contributions to river conservation and public awareness initiatives.
National Recognition as a "Water Warrior"
Verma is among several officers selected as "Water Warriors" by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), which operates under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. This honor acknowledges his active participation in large-scale awareness campaigns focused on the conservation and rejuvenation of the River Gomti. His work emphasizes:
- Behavioral change among communities
- Enhanced community participation in environmental efforts
- Promoting river-centric environmental responsibility
Beyond the Gomti, Verma has also led and supported awareness and sensitization programs related to the Kukrail river. These initiatives highlight the ecological importance of the river and underscore the need for integrated river–wetland conservation in urban and peri-urban landscapes.
Carrying Lucknow's Commitment to the National Stage
Sonalika Singh, Unit Head (Communications & Outreach) at the State Mission for Clean Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, commented on this achievement. She stated, "By being invited as a special guest for the Republic Day Parade, Shivang will represent Lucknow as a ‘Water Warrior', carrying forward the city's commitment to river conservation, public awareness, and sustainable water management at the national stage. His efforts have consistently emphasized youth engagement, citizen ownership, and convergence among departments."
International Acclaim and Leadership
Shivang Verma's contributions have garnered recognition on both national and international platforms. He holds a place in the Asia Book of Records and has been listed among the UN 10 Young Inspirational Leaders from India. These accolades acknowledge his leadership and innovative approach to environmental governance and water stewardship, setting a benchmark for others in the field.
This invitation to the Republic Day parade not only honors Verma's dedication but also shines a spotlight on Lucknow's ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
