From Caracas to Puttaparthi: A Spiritual Journey
Although raised Catholic, Maduro's spiritual path took a significant turn through the influence of his wife, Cilia Flores, a lawyer and legislator. Flores was a dedicated follower of Sai Baba long before her marriage to Maduro. It was she who orchestrated a pivotal journey to India in 2005, bringing Maduro to meet the fuzzy-haired spiritual leader at his ashram, Prashanti Nilayam.

The image was placed alongside those of revolutionary icons like Simón Bolívar and his political mentor, Hugo Chávez, signifying the guru's esteemed status in Maduro's worldview.
More recently, on November 23, 2025, Maduro released an official statement celebrating the centenary of Sai Baba's birth. He referred to the godman as a "being of light" and noted that the memory of their meeting "renews in me the strength of his eternal message." Under his administration, the Sathya Sai organization expanded its footprint in Venezuela, operating schools and human value institutes even as other foreign NGOs faced operational restrictions.
Divine Blessings Sought in Legal Storm
This spiritual backdrop now contrasts starkly with Maduro's current reality. He and his wife, Cilia Flores, were recently taken into custody and perp-walked into Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. The facility is notorious for its squalid conditions and has housed other high-profile inmates like music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs and alleged crime figure Luigi Mangione.
The couple faces investigations by US agencies for alleged drug trafficking, charges they vehemently deny. As they confront a legal battle that could span years, observers note they may need all the divine blessings they can summon. The precedent is daunting: the last Latin American strongman prosecuted on US drug charges, Panama's Manuel Noriega in 1992, spent nearly two decades in prison. He was eventually released as a sick and broken man, later dying from a brain tumor at age 83.
