Maharashtra Government Collaborates with Cambridge University for Digital Climate Education Initiative

The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step toward enhancing environmental education by signing a memorandum of understanding with Cambridge University Press & Assessment. This partnership introduces the Cambridge Climate Quest digital education program specifically designed for students in Classes 8 and 9 across government schools throughout the state.

Official Signing Ceremony at Mantralaya

The formal agreement was executed at Mantralaya, where Dr. Hemant Wasekar, Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, and Arun Rajamani, Managing Director for South Asia at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, signed the document. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several key government officials, including Cabinet Minister for School Education Dadaji Bhuse, Cabinet Minister for Environment and Climate Change Pankaja Munde, Minister of State for School Education Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar, Principal Secretary for School Education Ranjit Singh Deol, and State Project Director for Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Sanjay Yadav.

Comprehensive Climate Curriculum for Students

Through this MoU, the Cambridge Climate Quest program will deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering essential environmental topics. The digital platform will provide instruction in both English and Marathi, ensuring broader accessibility. The curriculum includes:

  • Fundamental climate science principles
  • Impact of climate change on ecosystems
  • Renewable energy sources and technologies
  • Responsible consumption patterns
  • Practical approaches to environmental conservation

Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Through this MoU for the Climate Quest Programme, which is part of a larger agreement with Cambridge University, the government of Maharashtra has taken an important step toward promoting climate education in our schools. Students will receive international environmental knowledge and be trained to understand their responsibility in addressing real-life challenges."

Program Implementation and Expansion Plans

The program will initially target approximately 200,000 students in Classes 8 and 9, with plans for future expansion to additional grade levels. Implementation will be coordinated through multiple educational bodies, including the State Council of Educational Research and Training, District Institutes of Education and Training, and participating government schools across Maharashtra.

Dadaji Bhuse explained, "Through this initiative, students will be provided with a comprehensive curriculum on environment, climate change and related topics. The programme will initially be implemented for students of Classes 8 and 9, and will later be expanded further." He added that the School Education Department will complement this initiative with hygiene awareness programs and active participation in environmental conservation activities during June.

Recognition and Language Accessibility

Students who demonstrate exceptional performance in the Cambridge Climate Quest program will receive joint certification from Cambridge University Press & Assessment and the Maharashtra state government. Dr. Bhoyar specifically urged Cambridge to make the program available in Marathi to maximize reach among students across the state.

Pankaja Munde highlighted the awareness-building aspect of the partnership, stating, "The MoU between the department and Cambridge University Press & Assessment India will help create awareness among school students about how to protect the environment."

Educational Approach and Partnership Significance

The Cambridge Climate Quest employs an activity-based learning methodology that encourages critical thinking about environmental challenges. Rather than traditional lecture formats, the program emphasizes hands-on engagement with climate issues through digital platforms.

Arun Rajamani of Cambridge University Press & Assessment commented on the partnership's significance, saying, "The starting point for addressing the complex challenges of sustainable growth is education, which equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and problem-solving abilities needed to shape solutions. Our partnership with the government of Maharashtra is an important step in expanding access to climate education and empowering students across the state to become informed, responsible, and future-ready citizens."

This collaboration represents a substantial investment in climate literacy for Maharashtra's youth, positioning the state as a leader in integrating international environmental education standards into public school curricula through digital learning platforms.
