Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green said Melbourne is buzzing with excitement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to arrive for a three-day official visit starting Wednesday, July 8. The visit, at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, aims to strengthen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
High Commissioner's Video Message
In a video message posted on social media platform X, Green expressed anticipation from Melbourne's waterfront. "So here I am in Melbourne, on the banks of the Arrow River, waiting to welcome Prime Minister Modi this evening to Australia. And it's great that he's coming to this city," he said.
Green noted the city's energy: "A quick vibe check from Melbourne: the city is buzzing and ready to extend you a warm welcome. I've just arrived, and the excitement is palpable. A big week of conversations, connections, and progress for the Australia-India partnership."
Focus on Trade and Commerce
While acknowledging the major diaspora engagement planned, Green stressed the importance of trade and commerce. "I know many people are focusing on the major diaspora engagement, but very, very important is the trade and commerce relationship between our countries. Already terrific with our first phase free trade agreement, that can get even stronger," he said. He added that Melbourne, as a city of culture, offers opportunities to expand arts and cultural ties with India.
Sporting Ties and Cultural Bridges
Green highlighted Melbourne's sporting heritage, calling it the home of Cricket Australia. "We look forward to doing more with India in the field of sport, which has been at the heart of our relationship for so long," he said. He noted favorable weather and a palpable buzz in the city ahead of the prime minister's arrival.
This is Modi's third official visit to Australia as prime minister and coincides with the Australia-India Annual Leaders' Summit. The visit is the second leg of a three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand.
High-Level Engagements Planned
During his stay in Melbourne, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Albanese and pay a courtesy call on Governor-General Sam Mostyn. He will also participate in the India-Australia CEOs Forum, addressing leading corporate figures from both nations.
Albanese, in a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office in Canberra, described India as a vital economic ally. "I am honoured to welcome my friend Prime Minister Modi to Australia for our Annual Leaders' Summit. The Australia-India relationship has never been more consequential, and our partnership fosters peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific," Albanese said.
He noted that cooperation on trade, defence, security, and technology delivers benefits for both countries, anchored in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
