Aizawl: Two legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mizoram and the sole lawmaker of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) remain undecided about whether to back the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) candidate or the Mizo National Front (MNF) nominee in the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 18.
Both the BJP and Congress have chosen not to field their own candidates in the upcoming election. State BJP president and legislator K Beichhua stated that while the party decided against contesting, a final decision on whether he and fellow BJP MLA K Hrahmo will cast their votes is still pending. “The decision will be made after consulting the national leadership,” Beichhua said.
The lone Congress legislator, C Ngunlianchunga, mentioned that he would exercise his franchise as a citizen but added that the MPCC leadership would determine which candidate he should support.
The ruling ZPM has fielded its spokesperson K Laltluangkima as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat, while the opposition MNF has nominated Zothansangi Hmar, an advocate and member of the party's Legal Board.
In the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly, the ZPM holds 27 seats, while the MNF has 10 legislators.
