Strengthening Bonds: PM Modi's Significant Bhutan Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday for a crucial two-day visit that underscores the deep-rooted relationship between the two neighboring nations. The Indian leader was warmly received at Paro airport by his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay, who referred to Modi as his "elder brother" in a social media post welcoming the Indian Prime Minister.
The visit marks Modi's continued commitment to strengthening India-Bhutan relations, recalling that his first foreign trip after becoming Prime Minister in 2014 was also to the Himalayan kingdom. "Our relationship is one of values, emotions, peace, and progress," Modi emphasized, noting that the friendship between India and Bhutan possesses remarkable depth and resilience.
Major Hydroelectric Project Inauguration
The centerpiece of the visit was the joint inauguration of the 1,020 megawatt Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a massive undertaking developed collaboratively by India and Bhutan. This significant infrastructure project represents the ongoing energy cooperation between the two nations and contributes substantially to Bhutan's economic development.
During productive bilateral discussions with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the leaders covered extensive ground on multiple fronts of cooperation. "We discussed cooperation in sectors like energy, capacity building, connectivity, technology, defence and security," Modi stated following the meeting. India takes pride in being a key partner in Bhutan's development journey, the Prime Minister added.
Substantial Agreements and Compassionate Gestures
The bilateral talks yielded several important decisions that will further cement the relationship between the two countries. Notably, both sides reached an understanding to resume work on the main dam structure of the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, signaling continued commitment to energy collaboration.
In a significant cultural exchange, India will grant land in Varanasi for constructing a Bhutanese temple and monastery along with a guest house. Additionally, plans were finalized to establish an immigration check post in Hatisar (India) across from Gelephu in Bhutan, facilitating smoother cross-border movement.
Financial cooperation received a major boost with the agreement on a Rs 4,000-crore Line of Credit to Bhutan, demonstrating India's commitment to supporting its neighbor's development aspirations.
The visit was also marked by heartfelt compassion when King Wangchuck led thousands of Bhutanese citizens in prayers at the Changlimathang stadium for the victims of the recent Delhi blast that claimed 13 lives. The Bhutanese leadership conveyed sincere condolences for the tragic loss of precious lives, with special prayers offered for all those affected by the explosion.
Modi's visit coincides with the exposition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha, which have been sent to Bhutan from India, further emphasizing the cultural and spiritual connections between the two nations. The Prime Minister will also participate in the 70th birthday celebrations of former king Jigme Singye Wangchuck on Wednesday, highlighting the personal relationships that underpin the strong bilateral ties.
"We supported each other in times of difficulty. We faced challenges together, and today, as we advance towards development and prosperity, this bond continues to become even stronger," Modi reflected, capturing the essence of the special relationship that transcends mere diplomatic formalities.
