The shores of Shanghumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram transformed into a grand stage of maritime power on Wednesday, as hundreds gathered to witness the Indian Navy's spectacular Navy Day demonstration. The event, a vivid display of operational prowess, featured a formidable array of assets including the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, naval ships, submarines, fighter jets, and the elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS).
Aerial Ballet and Maritime Might on Display
The demonstration commenced shortly after President Droupadi Murmu arrived at the venue around 5:30 PM. The evening sky was instantly set ablaze as three helicopters flew past, firing brilliant flares. This dramatic opening was swiftly followed by a graceful flypast by three Dornier aircraft. The true scale of the display became evident with the participation of more than 20 naval ships and a submarine, anchored by the mighty INS Vikrant.
The carrier itself was the source of one of the day's highlights, with a fighter jet thundering off its deck, symbolizing India's blue-water capabilities. Dynamic operational scenarios unfolded, including a precise helicopter landing on the moving INS Imphal and a thrilling demonstration where naval personnel neutralized pirates by storming a simulated stricken vessel.
Grace, Culture, and Tribute
Adding a touch of tradition to the technological showcase, the Navy's majestic sail training vessels, INS Sudarshini and INS Tarangini, sailed past the audience. The cultural segment saw the Sea Cadet Corps perform the lively Hornpipe dance, while fast-sequenced Continuity Drills by naval personnel displayed impeccable discipline and coordination.
The event reached its poignant conclusion with a soul-stirring Beating Retreat ceremony by the Indian Naval Band, accompanied by the traditional illumination of ships during sunset. In her address, President Murmu highlighted the Navy's evolving role, noting its commitment to protecting India's Exclusive Economic Zone and promoting the peaceful use of the seas. She also expressed hope for continued indigenization of technology and empowerment of domestic shipbuilders.

Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi used the occasion to pay homage to the courage and sacrifice of naval personnel. He underscored the significance of hosting Navy Day in Thiruvananthapuram, pointing to the strong maritime heritage of the historic Travancore Kingdom, which was renowned for securing its coastal routes and ports from threats.
