Indian Navy Enhances Coastal Defence with Indigenous Anti-Submarine Vessel 'Malwan'
In a major advancement for India's coastal defence infrastructure, Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has officially delivered the 'Malwan', the second vessel in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercrafts (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy. This delivery represents a critical milestone in fortifying the nation's maritime security through homegrown technological innovation, as highlighted in a statement from CSL.
Historical Significance and Naming Tradition
The vessel is named after the historic coastal town of Malwan in Maharashtra, a region deeply connected to the maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This naming choice continues the naval tradition of honouring its distinguished past, as it revives the legacy of the erstwhile INS Malwan, a naval minesweeper that was decommissioned in 2003. By linking modern capabilities with historical roots, the Indian Navy underscores its commitment to blending heritage with cutting-edge technology.
Advanced Design and Indigenous Construction
Designed and constructed entirely by CSL in strict compliance with the Indian Navy's specifications and DNV Classification Rules, Malwan stands as a formidable addition to the naval fleet. Measuring nearly 80 meters in length with a displacement of 1,100 tonnes, the vessel features a high-agility waterjet propulsion system, ensuring superior manoeuvrability in shallow waters. This design is specifically tailored for effective operations in coastal regions.
State-of-the-Art Combat and Surveillance Systems
Equipped with advanced weaponry, Malwan includes torpedoes and multifunctional anti-submarine rockets, making it a potent force against underwater threats. The vessel is integrated with a state-of-the-art surveillance system, comprising sophisticated sensors, advanced radars, and high-tech sonar systems. These capabilities enable precise detection and engagement of submarines, enhancing the Navy's defensive posture.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat Initiative and Indigenous Content
With over 80% indigenous content, Malwan serves as a shining exemplar of the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) vision. The vessel incorporates complex systems developed and integrated by the domestic defence ecosystem, involving numerous micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This achievement not only boosts self-reliance but also stimulates the local defence manufacturing sector, contributing to economic growth and technological sovereignty.
Versatile Operational Capabilities
Beyond its primary role in anti-submarine warfare, Malwan is optimised for low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO) and mine warfare, showcasing its versatility in various naval scenarios. This multi-role functionality ensures that the vessel can adapt to diverse security challenges, from coastal patrols to defensive mine-laying operations, thereby strengthening India's overall maritime readiness.
The delivery of Malwan marks a pivotal step in enhancing India's naval prowess, with future vessels in the ASW SWC series expected to further bolster coastal defence. As the Indian Navy continues to modernise its fleet, such indigenous projects highlight the nation's growing capability in defence innovation and maritime security.
