Noida International Airport Set to Launch Commercial Services Within Two Months

Commercial flight operations at the newly inaugurated Noida International Airport are expected to commence within the next 45 to 60 days, according to Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu. The announcement came on Saturday as the minister confirmed that final preparatory steps are actively underway at the greenfield aviation hub.

Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates Major Aviation Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport earlier in the day, marking a significant milestone for one of India's largest aviation infrastructure developments. Located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, the airport represents a major step forward in expanding the country's aviation capacity and connectivity.

Minister Naidu provided specific details about the timeline, stating that services would begin within the next 45 to 60 days. He emphasized that work on the airport's comprehensive security framework is currently in progress to ensure safe operations from day one. The minister also revealed that IndiGo has expressed preliminary interest in operating flights from the new facility, though formal agreements are still being finalized.

Impressive Infrastructure and Capacity Details

The Noida International Airport, situated in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, has been designed with substantial capacity in mind:

  • Initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually
  • Ultimate capacity of 70 million passengers per year upon completion of all four phases
  • First phase developed with an investment of approximately Rs 11,200 crore
  • Airport code assigned as 'DXN'

The airport will be operated by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, under a public-private partnership model that brings international expertise to the project.

Advanced Technical Specifications and Facilities

The infrastructure boasts several impressive technical features that position it as a modern aviation facility:

  1. A substantial 3,900-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft
  2. Modern navigation systems including the Instrument Landing System (ILS)
  3. Advanced airfield lighting for enhanced operational safety
  4. Initial capacity to handle up to 30 flights per hour
  5. 28 aircraft stands in the first phase

Terminal 1 spans an impressive 1,37,985 square metres and includes 48 check-in counters to facilitate passenger processing. The airport received its aerodrome licence from aviation regulator DGCA earlier this month, clearing a crucial regulatory hurdle.

Cargo and Maintenance Capabilities

The airport's capabilities extend beyond passenger services to include substantial cargo and maintenance facilities:

  • Cargo handling capacity projected at approximately 2.5 lakh tonnes
  • More than 40 acres allocated for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities
  • Strategic partnership established with Akasa Air to develop an MRO facility at the site

Although passenger services were originally slated to begin in September 2024, the rollout has been carefully aligned with phased development to ensure all systems are properly tested and operational. This approach reflects the project's commitment to safety and operational excellence from the very beginning of commercial services.

The Noida International Airport represents a transformative addition to India's aviation landscape, promising to enhance regional connectivity, boost economic development in Uttar Pradesh, and provide passengers with modern, efficient travel options. As the final preparations continue over the coming weeks, aviation authorities and airport operators are working diligently to ensure a smooth and successful launch of commercial operations.
