Noida International Airport Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Flight Operations Delayed Until May
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Noida International Airport on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for aviation infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh. However, commercial flight operations are not expected to commence until May, as the airport must complete final regulatory steps before airlines can begin services.
The delay is not attributed to unfinished construction or infrastructure issues. Instead, it stems from mandatory regulatory clearances that every new airport must obtain prior to allowing airlines to open bookings and initiate operations. These steps are crucial for ensuring safety, security, and operational efficiency.
Key Regulatory Hurdles: Security and Tariff Approvals
The most critical pending clearance is the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) certification, which must be granted by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The ASP serves as the airport's core security framework, detailing procedures for checks from entry gates to boarding areas. It assigns responsibilities to all stakeholders, including the airport operator, airlines, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and ground handlers. Additionally, the ASP outlines contingency plans to enable authorities to respond swiftly to any security threats or emergencies.
Shailendra Bhatia, nodal officer for Noida International Airport Ltd—the Uttar Pradesh government's special purpose vehicle overseeing the project—stated that ASP clearance is anticipated shortly. "ASP is an important stage following the aerodrome licence, which was awarded to Noida International Airport on March 6. Once approved, it will pave the way for commercial flight operations within the next 30 to 35 days. Therefore, May is the likely timeframe," he explained.
Another essential step is the finalization of the airport's tariff structure by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority. On March 23, the authority conducted a consultation with stakeholders regarding the proposed tariff and invited feedback until April 17. Only after the tariff is officially set can airlines formally publish their routes and open ticket sales, a process expected to take approximately one month.
Airlines and Initial Flight Network
Several airlines have already committed to operating domestic flights from Noida International Airport. IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are among the carriers set to launch services. The initial flight network is projected to connect Noida with major Indian cities, including:
- Mumbai
- Bengaluru
- Hyderabad
- Chennai
- Lucknow
- Dehradun
The final route list will be confirmed once the security clearance is obtained, ensuring all operational aspects are in place.
Enhancing Connectivity and Infrastructure
To bolster last-mile connectivity, Noida International Airport has entered into agreements with multiple transportation partners. These include UP Roadways, Mahindra Mobility, Uber, and Rapido, all of which will deploy fleets at the airport to facilitate passenger movement to and from the facility.
Constructed in four phases, the airport will commence operations with a single runway and one terminal, capable of handling up to 1.2 crore passengers annually. A dedicated cargo terminal is also prepared for inauguration, supporting freight and logistics services from the outset.
This development positions Noida International Airport as a key aviation hub in the National Capital Region, contributing to regional economic growth and improved travel accessibility for residents and businesses alike.
