Noida International Airport Formally Inaugurated, Set to Revolutionize Delhi-NCR Aviation
NOIDA: The Delhi-National Capital Region's second international airport was formally inaugurated on Saturday, marking a historic moment for India's aviation sector. The Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar has now been added to the country's aviation map, creating both space and enhanced means for the national capital—already India's largest aviation hub—to play a significantly bigger role in global connectivity.
Prime Minister Modi Emphasizes Strategic Importance
A day before the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the airport's multifaceted benefits. "Tomorrow, March 28, is a day of immense importance for the people of Uttar Pradesh and the NCR," Modi wrote on social media platform X. He emphasized that Noida International Airport will not just strengthen commerce and connectivity but also ease pressure on the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi.
The Prime Minister further elaborated, "Noida airport is among key greenfield projects in our nation. In addition to passenger services, it will have a robust cargo ecosystem, thus boosting the logistics sector." He attached photographs of the terminal building with his post, showcasing the modern infrastructure.
Inauguration Ceremony and Public Gathering
Prime Minister Modi arrived at the airport at 11:30 AM on Saturday, conducted a walkthrough of the terminal building, and formally inaugurated the airport around noon. Following the inauguration, he addressed a substantial public gathering. The event attracted large crowds from Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, and various other parts of western Uttar Pradesh.
To accommodate the massive turnout, three pandals were set up with a combined capacity for more than one lakh people, reflecting the widespread public interest in this landmark development.
Flight Operations Expected to Commence in May
While the airport has been inaugurated, flight operations from NIA are likely to begin only in May. This phased approach allows for final preparations and testing to ensure seamless service commencement.
Substantial Capacity Addition and Economic Impact
Noida International Airport will add a substantial capacity of 1.2 crore fliers annually to Delhi-NCR's airport infrastructure. This expansion provides airlines with more room for growth and offers flyers increased options, potentially leading to more competitive pricing and improved services.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who accompanied the Prime Minister during the inauguration, expressed optimism about the airport's transformative potential. In a post on X, Adityanath stated that NIA will help the state emerge as a global connectivity hub. "This airport will open new doors of economic progress and will also give fresh momentum to the state's journey of development and prosperity," he affirmed.
Last week, the Chief Minister personally reviewed preparations for the airport's inauguration, underscoring the state government's commitment to the project's success. The Noida International Airport represents a significant step in enhancing India's aviation infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and improving regional and international connectivity for millions of passengers.
