Naga Students' Federation Expresses Sorrow and Condemnation Over Manipur Killing
The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) issued a strong statement on Tuesday, expressing deep sorrow and unequivocal condemnation regarding the tragic killing of four cadres belonging to the Eastern Flank. This Myanmar-based group is an estranged formation of the Naga Army operating under the NSCN (IM). The incident occurred at Hongbei village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kasom Khullen police station in Manipur's Kamjong district on the night of March 28.
Details of the Tragic Incident and NSF's Response
Reports emerging from the region suggest that the killing took place following an ambush laid by cadres from the same group, targeting the victims. In an official release, the federation described this event as not only tragic and deeply disturbing but also profoundly detrimental to the collective aspirations of the Naga people. This sentiment is particularly poignant given the current context, where the community eagerly awaits an honorable and inclusive political solution to the protracted Naga issue.
The NSF has characterized this incident as indicative of a disturbing trend of internal discord, which it believes is being driven by vested interests. Such actions, the federation argues, significantly undermine the unity and integrity of the broader Naga cause. In a show of solidarity, the NSF has extended its support to the bereaved families, who have reportedly refused to accept the mortal remains of their loved ones. The federation has emphatically demanded truth, accountability, and justice for this grievous act.
Serious Questions Raised and Calls for Investigation
"This incident has raised serious and legitimate questions: how can individuals committed to the Naga national cause fall victim to violence within their own ranks, and why, at such a critical phase in the Naga political journey, do incidents stemming from narrow and vested interests continue to surface?" the federation questioned in its statement.
While acknowledging the NSCN (IM) for initiating an investigation into the matter, the NSF has urged that this inquiry be conducted in a time-bound, impartial, and transparent manner. The federation has demanded that those found responsible be held accountable strictly in accordance with established rules and principles of justice.
Appeal for Restraint and Unity
In its concluding remarks, the NSF called upon all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint, uphold unity, and remain steadfast in the shared vision of peace, dignity, and justice for the Naga people. "The sanctity of the Naga cause must not be compromised by internal strife and acts of violence," the federation added, reinforcing its commitment to a peaceful resolution.
This incident underscores the fragile nature of internal dynamics within groups advocating for the Naga cause, highlighting the urgent need for cohesion as the community navigates its complex political landscape.
