Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of denying statehood to the region because the people voted for the National Conference (NC). Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Abdullah alleged that the BJP is punishing the electorate for not supporting its candidates in the recent assembly elections.
Political Allegations Over Statehood
Omar Abdullah stated that the BJP-led central government has not restored Jammu and Kashmir's statehood despite promises made in Parliament. He claimed that the delay is intentional and stems from the people's mandate favoring the NC-Congress alliance. "The BJP cannot digest that people rejected them and voted for us. Now they are taking revenge by denying statehood," he said.
Impact on Governance
The former chief minister emphasized that the lack of statehood hampers effective governance and development. He urged the central government to fulfill its commitment without further delay. "Statehood is not just a political demand but a necessity for the welfare of the people," Abdullah added.
BJP's Response
The BJP has dismissed Abdullah's allegations, stating that the restoration of statehood is a process that requires time and careful consideration. Party spokesperson said, "The government is committed to restoring statehood at an appropriate time. Omar Abdullah's accusations are baseless and politically motivated."
Political Context
Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370. Since then, there have been repeated demands for the restoration of statehood. The NC-Congress alliance won a majority in the recent assembly elections, forming the government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The BJP, which won fewer seats, has been critical of the new government's policies.
Political analysts view Abdullah's statement as an attempt to pressure the central government ahead of the upcoming Parliament session. The issue of statehood remains a contentious point in Jammu and Kashmir's political landscape.
