Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Embark on Saudi Arabia Visit
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia in the next 48 hours, following an official invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This high-profile diplomatic mission, as reported by Geo News on Monday, occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional instability, with a fragile ceasefire currently in effect after six weeks of intense conflict.
Ceasefire and Ongoing Tensions
The ceasefire, which began on Tuesday, follows a period of fighting that resulted in thousands of casualties, disrupted global energy supplies, and sparked fears of a broader regional war. Although Iran has temporarily halted attacks on US sites in Gulf nations, underlying tensions remain critically high, threatening to undermine peace efforts.
In a related development, marathon talks held in Islamabad from Saturday into early Sunday, lasting 21 hours, concluded without a formal agreement. Shortly after these discussions, the US military announced plans to impose a blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas. This move poses a significant risk to the already delicate two-week ceasefire, potentially escalating hostilities further.
Focus of the Riyadh Visit
During his visit to Riyadh, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to engage in extensive consultations on key regional and international developments. Financial cooperation will be a major agenda item, especially in light of recent announcements from Riyadh and Doha regarding $5 billion in assistance for Pakistan. This aid is crucial for Pakistan's economic stability and development projects.
Delegation and Security Measures
Shehbaz Sharif will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Special Assistant Syed Tariq Fatemi. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is also anticipated to join, pending the completion of his ongoing visit to the United States.
In a parallel security initiative, Pakistan has deployed fighter jets and other military forces to Saudi Arabia to bolster security under a defence pact signed in September 2025. This agreement commits both nations to treat any aggression against either country as an attack on both, thereby deepening their long-standing strategic and security partnership. This military reinforcement underscores the importance of bilateral ties in maintaining regional stability.
The visit highlights Pakistan's proactive diplomatic efforts to navigate complex geopolitical challenges while strengthening economic and security collaborations with key allies like Saudi Arabia.
