Pakistani Diplomat Reiterates Kashmir Stance at New Delhi Ceremony
In a recent address at the Pakistan Day commemoration held in New Delhi, Saad Ahmad Warraich, the Charge d'Affaires of Pakistan to India, brought the Kashmir issue back into the spotlight. The event, which took place on Monday at the Pakistan High Commission, saw Warraich hoist the national flag and deliver remarks that underscored Pakistan's position on bilateral relations with India.
Call for Peaceful Relations Based on Dispute Resolution
Warraich stated that peaceful relations between Pakistan and India can only be established based on equality, mutual respect, and the harmonious settlement of all disputes. He specifically highlighted the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, calling for a "just settlement" in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. This statement aligns with Pakistan's long-standing demand for international intervention in the region.
India's Firm Response and Stance on Kashmir
In response, India has consistently maintained its desire for normal neighborly relations with Pakistan. However, New Delhi emphasizes that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment free from terror and hostility for any meaningful engagement. India asserts that the entire Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of its territory, accusing Pakistan of illegally occupying parts of the Union territory. This divergence in views continues to be a major stumbling block in bilateral diplomacy.
Historical Context and National Pride
During his speech, Warraich also reflected on Pakistan's history, mentioning the Lahore Resolution of March 23, 1940, which he described as a touchstone for Muslims in the subcontinent striving for a separate homeland. He credited Muhammad Ali Jinnah's leadership for the establishment of Pakistan within seven years. Additionally, Warraich paid homage to the martyrs of Pakistan's freedom movement, stating that their sacrifices inspire the nation to uphold freedom and work towards progress and prosperity.
Emphasis on Sovereignty and Regional Stability
The envoy underscored that true freedom belongs to nations strong enough to defend it, asserting Pakistan's unwavering resolve to preserve its sovereignty and independence. He claimed that Pakistan's established deterrence contributes to stability in South Asia and assures regional peace, though he did not elaborate on specific measures. The event was attended by officers, staff, and families of the High Commission, with messages from Pakistan's president, prime minister, and deputy prime minister being read out.
This development highlights the ongoing tensions and diplomatic challenges between India and Pakistan, with the Kashmir issue remaining a central point of contention. Both nations continue to express their positions firmly, indicating that a resolution may require significant diplomatic efforts and mutual concessions in the future.
