Patna Train Collision Probe Launched After Pickup Van Breaks Locked Gate
Authorities in Patna have initiated a thorough investigation into a severe safety breach that resulted in a collision between a pickup van and a passenger train at a level crossing in Fatuha, under the Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR). The incident occurred on Saturday night, prompting immediate action from railway officials.
Details of the Incident
According to Fatuha RPF inspector Vinod Kumar Vishwakarma, the collision took place as the Islampur-Hatia Express (18623) was approaching the crossing. In a reckless move, the pickup van forcibly broke through a closed and locked gate, becoming stuck directly on the railway tracks. Moments later, the oncoming train rammed into the vehicle, dragging it for a considerable distance before coming to a complete halt.
Miraculous Escape Prevents Casualties
The occupants of the pickup van managed to flee the scene just moments before the collision, averting what could have been a catastrophic loss of life. Inspector Vishwakarma emphasized, "It was sheer luck that no lives were lost. This could have turned into a major tragedy," highlighting the grave risks posed by such safety violations.
Railway Response and Disruptions
Railway safety personnel were swiftly dispatched to the location, where they worked to remove the damaged vehicle from the tracks. As a result of the collision, the Islampur-Hatia Express remained stranded for nearly two hours, from approximately 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM, before being cleared to resume its journey towards Patna en route to Hatia.
Legal Action Pursued Against Violators
In response to the incident, the railways have approached the Patna district transport officer (DTO) to identify the owner of the pickup van. This step is crucial for pursuing a case against those responsible for blatantly violating established safety norms, underscoring the authorities' commitment to enforcing railway regulations.
Broader Implications for Railway Safety
This event raises significant concerns about safety at level crossings, particularly in regions under the East Central Railway. The forced entry through a locked gate points to potential lapses in security measures or driver negligence, prompting calls for enhanced monitoring and stricter enforcement to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The investigation continues as officials gather evidence and statements to hold accountable those involved in this dangerous breach, aiming to reinforce the importance of adhering to safety protocols to protect both rail passengers and the public.
