PM Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto hold talks in Jakarta
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed the outcomes from his discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, affirming that bilateral relations between the two nations will "keep scaling new heights." In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "The outcomes from this visit are comprehensive, substantive and futuristic. The India-Indonesia friendship will keep scaling new heights in the years to come."
20 MoUs signed across multiple sectors
Following bilateral and delegation-level engagements between PM Modi and President Subianto, the Ministry of External Affairs listed 20 Memorandums of Understanding signed between the two nations. These included cooperation on the BrahMos missile system and the setting up of an Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore branch campus at Singhasari SEZ in Indonesia.
Key agreements on minerals, maritime security, and defense
The MoUs signed covered cooperation in the field of minerals and technology of steel supply chain to promote investments in the mineral and mining sector, improve access to advanced extraction and processing technologies, encourage joint studies and projects, and strengthen critical mineral supply chains. An extension of the MoU and Implementation Arrangement on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation was also signed to strengthen cooperation between the coast guards of the two countries, improve coordination in maritime domain awareness, search and rescue, and capacity building, and promote safety and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific.
Another MoU between the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre, Midwest Ltds., and PT PERMINAS on development of rare earth magnets advances cooperation in rare earths and critical minerals and diversifies the supply chain. The cooperation on the BrahMos System demonstrates the capability of the Indian defense industry, strengthens Atmanirbhar Bharat, boosts indigenous defense manufacturing, and promotes innovation, global competitiveness, and exports. An Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement boosts India's defense exports and Make-in-India for the world, enhances technology collaboration and defense capabilities, and strengthens India's indigenous missile development ecosystem.
Strategic joint ventures and space cooperation
A strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India and Pt. Krakatau Steel for establishment of a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia advances joint production and access to technology, promotes job creation, and adds to industrial development and Viksit Bharat goals. The extension of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes promotes joint research, technology sharing, and capacity building, reinforcing a three-decade-long space partnership.
Cultural, agricultural, and health cooperation
India's assistance for conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta advances preservation of shared heritage and strengthens India's cultural diplomacy. An MoU on Cooperation in the field of Agriculture and Allied Sectors advances cooperation in sustainable agriculture, crops, and agricultural machinery, promoting joint study and research benefiting farmers and enabling food security and higher incomes. An MoU between CDSCO and BPOM on cooperation in the field of Medical Products Regulation enables knowledge exchange on global regulatory standards and best practices, strengthening regulatory cooperation and enhancing trust in Indian medical products.
Disaster management, telecom, and innovation
An MoU between the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Agency for Disaster Management, Indonesia advances sharing of best practices in disaster management, promotes tech-based applications for early warning and risk assessment, and improves coordination in disaster response and recovery. An MoU on Cooperation in the Field of Telecommunications Technologies and Services improves access to advanced telecom technologies, including wireless and quantum systems, and supports joint innovation and technology exchange. An MoU on Research, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation strengthens India's innovation ecosystem by enabling collaboration in key sectors, advances knowledge exchange and tech, and advances the startup and innovation ecosystem including Startup India Mission.
Health workforce, maritime security, and wheat supply
An Implementation Arrangement on Health Workforce Collaboration facilitates fellowship programs for health professionals, advances mobility of qualified healthcare professionals, and promotes hands-on clinical training in specialized medical fields. The deployment of an Indonesian Liaison Officer in IFC-IOR enhances real-time maritime information sharing and strengthens bilateral maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. India will supply 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR 162 wheat seeds to Indonesia to support food security of Indonesia and the Global South and advance broader engagement in developing resilient and sustainable agricultural cooperation.
Cultural diplomacy and digital public infrastructure
The commemoration of Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy celebrates the enduring shared educational vision of Rabindranath Tagore and Indonesia's Ki Hajar Dewantara, marking the centenary of Tagore's 1927 visit to Indonesia through a year-long program of joint cultural, educational, academic, and people-to-people initiatives. The setting up of the IIM Bangalore branch campus at Singhasari SEZ showcases India's academic excellence globally and strengthens India's reputation as a knowledge hub. Cooperation between the Open Network for Digital Commerce and the Indonesia Open Network promotes cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure modeled on the architecture of India's ONDC, harnessing the power of India's Digital Public Infrastructure to make services more accessible, efficient, and inclusive.
