PM Modi Addresses Indonesian Parliament on Shared Heritage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the Indonesian Parliament on July 7, 2026, underscored the deep-rooted historical and cultural bonds between India and Indonesia. He stated that the relationship between the two nations is "rooted in the legacy of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and in the ancient wisdom of Nalanda." Modi highlighted that India and Indonesia share a common history that transcends geographical proximity, emphasizing that their connection is strengthened through traditional art forms, monuments, and national symbols.

Cultural Connections: Wayang, Borobudur, and Garuda

PM Modi noted that the bond is reflected in Wayang, a traditional Indonesian puppetry based on the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as through dance and music. He also referenced the magnificent monuments of Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple complex, and Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites from the 9th century. Furthermore, he pointed out the shared connection through Indonesia's national symbol, Garuda, the mount of Lord Vishnu, and the festive spirit of Bali Yatra, which commemorates ancient maritime ties between Odisha and Indonesia.

Light-Hearted Moment: Krupuk vs. Papad

In a lighter moment, PM Modi compared the crunchiness of Indonesian Krupuk and Indian Papad, saying, "When it comes to taste, it is hard to decide which is crunchier—Krupuk or Papad. Yet, one thing is certain: both spices and bumbu play an integral role in our lives." This remark drew laughter and applause from the audience.

Vision for the Next 25 Years

PM Modi declared that the next 25 years are crucial for both nations, asserting that India and Indonesia stand together at a pivotal moment in history. He emphasized that the goodwill and trust shared by the two countries must create new opportunities for their citizens. "When India and Indonesia stand together, they strengthen the world's faith that democracy creates opportunities, democracy builds trust, and democracy shapes the future," he said. Modi articulated a vision of collaborative growth anchored in his policy of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' (development for all, with the participation of all).

Maritime Ties and Democratic Values

The Prime Minister highlighted the maritime connection between the two nations, noting that while the ocean often separates countries, for India and Indonesia, the sea acts as a bridge. "India, Indonesia, and the Indian Ocean—these names themselves bear witness to our deep-rooted connection. For millennia, our ports have linked us to the rest of the world, and our ships have carried trade and culture to distant lands," he stated. He urged for the elevation of the India-Indonesia relationship to new heights, drawing upon the vastness of the Indian Ocean. Modi also stressed that India pursues a policy of development rather than expansionism, positioning the India-Indonesia alliance as a global beacon of trust. The visit, from July 6-8, marks his fourth to Indonesia and serves to solidify a shared outlook on a free and open Indo-Pacific, as per ANI reports.
