PM Modi Embarks on Significant Two-Day State Visit to Bhutan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a highly significant two-day state visit to Bhutan today, a trip set to further cement the unique and exemplary partnership between the two neighbouring nations. The visit is strategically timed to coincide with major spiritual and national celebrations in the Himalayan kingdom, underscoring the deep-rooted civilisational bonds.
Spiritual Connections and High-Level Engagements
Upon his departure, Prime Minister Modi expressed that it would be his honour to join the people of Bhutan in marking the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. A key spiritual highlight of the visit is the exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India during the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival. The PM is scheduled to offer prayers to these holy relics at the Tashichhodzong in Thimphu.
"The exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics... reflects our two countries’ deep-rooted civilisational and spiritual ties," PM Modi stated, highlighting the shared heritage that forms the bedrock of the bilateral relationship. His itinerary includes active participation in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, an event described by Bhutan as unprecedented in its mission to pray for world peace and happiness.
Boosting Energy Partnership and Bilateral Ties
A major tangible outcome of this visit will be the inauguration of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a massive undertaking developed jointly by the Governments of India and Bhutan. This project marks another milestone in the successful energy partnership that is a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship.
Prime Minister Modi's agenda is packed with high-level meetings, including an audience with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and discussions with the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay. He will also attend celebrations dedicated to the Fourth King and participate in a MoU exchange event, symbolizing the continuous growth of cooperation.
A Partnership Poised for the Future
India's Ambassador to Bhutan, Sandeep Arya, emphasized the profound significance of the visit, noting it underscores the "closest partnership" between the two countries. The visit provides a prime opportunity for both sides to exchange views on regional issues and deliberate on ways to enhance their special partnership, which is renowned for its mutual trust, goodwill, and respect.
"I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity," PM Modi affirmed. The second day will see the Prime Minister meeting the Fourth King and attending the Kalchakra ceremony before returning to New Delhi, concluding a visit that blends diplomatic pragmatism with spiritual solidarity.
