PM Modi Addresses Indonesian Parliament on Terrorism and UN Reforms
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked Indonesia for its steadfast support following the Pahalgam terror attack last year, emphasizing that India and Indonesia share an unequivocal vision against terrorism. Speaking before a joint session of the Indonesian Parliament, the Kompleks Parlemen Republik Indonesia, PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian people for standing firmly with India during that difficult moment.
“On matters such as terrorism, India and Indonesia have had one unequivocal vision. Last year during the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam, Indonesia stood firmly with India in that moment. I express my gratitude to President Prabowo and all of you,” PM Modi said.
Joint Efforts to Counter Terrorism
The Prime Minister highlighted that both nations are working closely through a Joint Working Group mechanism to combat terrorism. He called for enhanced cooperation in intelligence sharing, cyber threat monitoring, terror financing, and deradicalization to strengthen pacifist forces globally.
“Intelligence, cyber threats, terror funding and deradicalisation – by increasing our cooperation in these areas, we can strengthen the pacifist forces in the world,” PM Modi stated.
Call for UNSC Reform and Indo-Pacific Vision
Noting the rapidly evolving global order, PM Modi asserted that countries like India and Indonesia seek equal participation and a significant role in international decision-making. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, stressing the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.
“In this global landscape, India firmly believes that reform of the UNSC can no longer be delayed,” he said, underscoring the urgent need for restructuring the United Nations Security Council to reflect contemporary realities.
Historical Ties and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
PM Modi recalled the historical bonds between the two nations, noting that both gained independence around the same time – Indonesia in 1945 and India in 1947. He highlighted India’s support for Indonesia’s independence movement at the United Nations and the role of Biju Patnaik in bringing Indonesian leaders Sutan Sjahrir and Mohammad Hatta to India, which strengthened bilateral ties.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi held talks with President Prabowo Subianto, reviewing the entire gamut of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Discussions covered trade and investment, defence and security, maritime cooperation, digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals and rare earths, culture, tourism, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Launch of Indonesia Open Network and Cultural Celebrations
The two leaders welcomed the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION), based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). To mark the centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Indonesia in 2027, PM Modi announced that both countries would jointly celebrate the occasion as “Tagore-Dewantara Year for Cultural and Educational Diplomacy,” according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.
PM Modi is on a three-day visit to Indonesia, further solidifying the multifaceted partnership between the two nations.
