Air Force Station Pune will host the 10th Defence Forces Veterans Day today. The event marks the birth anniversary of the late Field Marshal KM Cariappa. He served as India's first Commander-in-Chief. Cariappa retired from service on this very day in 1953.
Honouring Veterans' Sacrifice and Service
The day is dedicated to honouring the courage, sacrifice and service of veterans. These veterans come from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The programme at AFS Pune will start with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. This ceremony will take place at the Station War Memorial.
It pays homage to fallen bravehearts. These heroes laid down their lives in the service of the nation. Beyond ceremonial observances, the event has a broader purpose. It aims to strengthen the bond between serving personnel and veterans.
Addressing Practical Concerns for Veterans
The event also addresses practical concerns for veterans. These include issues related to pensions and grievances. Financial assistance matters will be discussed too. The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) is on the agenda. Other welfare initiatives will receive attention as well.
Interaction desks will assist attendees. Agencies like the Directorate of Air Veterans will set up these desks. The Principal Controller of Defence Accounts will participate. The Zila Sainik Kalyan Board will also be present. Around 4,000 to 5,000 veterans are expected to participate in the event.
This gathering underscores the nation's ongoing commitment to its former defenders. It provides a platform for support and recognition. The veterans' contributions remain vital to India's security legacy.
