Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell, stated on Monday that there is significant alignment among the foreign ministers of the Quad nations—Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, O'Farrell highlighted the shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Alignment on Strategic Priorities
The envoy emphasized that the Quad foreign ministers have developed a strong consensus on key regional issues, including maritime security, infrastructure development, and technology cooperation. 'There is alignment between the Quad foreign ministers,' O'Farrell said, noting that the group's discussions have been productive and forward-looking.
Focus on Cooperation
O'Farrell pointed to the Quad's collaborative efforts in areas such as vaccine distribution, climate action, and critical technologies. He underscored the importance of the Quad as a platform for practical cooperation, rather than a military alliance. 'The Quad is about delivering concrete outcomes for the region,' he added.
The Australian envoy also praised India's role in the Quad, calling it a 'key partner' in advancing shared goals. He noted that the Quad's work complements other regional frameworks like ASEAN and the Indian Ocean Rim Association.
Strengthening Ties
O'Farrell reiterated Australia's commitment to deepening bilateral ties with India, particularly in defense, trade, and education. He mentioned the upcoming visit of Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to India as a step toward further strengthening the partnership.
The Quad foreign ministers are expected to meet again later this year to review progress on their initiatives and discuss emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific.
