NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the India-US trade deal, accusing the central government of negotiating a pact aimed at securing relief for industrialist Gautam Adani.
Rahul Gandhi's Accusations
Continuing his sharp criticism of the Modi-led administration, Gandhi posted on social media platform X: “Compromised PM negotiated not a trade deal, but a deal for Adani’s release.” The statement came amid growing political controversy over the terms of the bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States.
Congress Party's Strong Reaction
The Congress party also strongly criticized the trade deal, labeling it as “one-sided” and detrimental to national interests. In a post on X, the grand old party alleged: “The fraud case against Adani in America will be closed. It’s now clear that Modi struck a one-sided deal with America for the sole purpose of giving Adani some relief. That’s precisely why Modi can’t speak openly in front of America.”
The party further claimed, “Whatever Trump says, Modi does exactly that. Modi is completely compromised.” These remarks reflect the opposition's deepening concerns over the perceived alignment of Indian foreign policy with the business interests of the Adani Group, which has faced legal scrutiny in the United States.
Bloomberg Article Cited
To substantiate its claims, Congress attached a Bloomberg article to its post, highlighting that “US authorities move to end fraud cases against Gautam Adani.” The article reportedly suggests a shift in the legal stance of American agencies regarding the Adani Group, which the opposition interprets as evidence of governmental intervention through the trade deal.
Political Implications
The allegations have intensified the political debate over the Modi government's handling of international trade negotiations and its relationship with corporate conglomerates. Critics argue that the deal prioritizes the interests of a select few over broader economic benefits, while the government has denied any impropriety, emphasizing the mutual advantages of the agreement.
