Indian Railways Initiates Final Survey for Gangtok-Nathu La Railway Line

In a significant development for regional connectivity, Indian Railways has commenced the final location survey (FLS) to establish a new railway line between Gangtok and Nathu La. This move follows the completion of the FLS for the Rangpo to Gangtok stretch, which spans 34.7 kilometers. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance rail infrastructure in the northeastern states, with work on the new line anticipated to begin within two years.

Progress on Sevoke-Rangpo Section

Simultaneously, construction is advancing rapidly on the railway line connecting Sevoke in West Bengal to Rangpo in Sikkim. Railway officials have confirmed that trains are scheduled to become operational on this segment by March 2027. The total length of this section is 44.96 kilometers, with 41.55 kilometers located in West Bengal and 3.41 kilometers in Sikkim. It will feature five stations: Sevoke, Riyang, Teesta Bazar, Melli, and Rangpo.

Key infrastructure elements include 14 tunnels and 13 bridges, all being constructed by IRCON International Ltd on behalf of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). During a recent inspection, Alipurduar DRM Devendra Singh reviewed various aspects such as layouts, passenger amenities, yard planning, and safety compliance. An NFR official noted that only two tunnels remain to be fully excavated before track-laying can commence, with the Sevoke-Rangpo line expected to be functional by March of next year.

Historical Context and Challenges

The initiative to provide rail connectivity to Sikkim was originally sanctioned in 2008-09 but faced significant delays due to environmental concerns, particularly as the proposed route passes through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Work finally began in 2018, only to be further hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, the challenging hilly terrain and frequent landslides during monsoon seasons have necessitated extra precautions, contributing to project delays.

Once completed, this railway line will mark a historic milestone, making Nathu La the first location along the Sino-India border to have direct train connectivity. This development is poised to boost tourism, trade, and overall accessibility in the region, supporting economic growth and strategic interests.
