Rajnath Singh Extends Co-Creation Invitation to German Industry During Berlin Address
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered a significant address to German parliamentarians in Berlin on Tuesday, presenting India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative as far more than a domestic procurement program. He characterized it as "an invitation to co-create, co-develop, and co-innovate" with global partners, specifically targeting Germany's advanced industrial sector.
High-Profile Welcome and Strategic Meetings
Upon his arrival in Germany, Singh received a ceremonial welcome at Berlin airport with full military honors, underscoring the importance of his diplomatic mission. His journey from Munich to Berlin was conducted aboard a special German Air Force aircraft, accompanied by an escort of fighter jets—a gesture highlighting the strategic significance attached to his visit.
During his three-day official tour, the Defence Minister is scheduled to engage in comprehensive discussions with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, along with other senior political and defence leaders. These talks are expected to focus on deepening bilateral defence and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
Pitch for Enhanced Defence Industrial Collaboration
Speaking before the German parliamentary standing committee, Singh made a compelling case for strengthening collaboration between the defence industrial ecosystems of India and Germany. He emphasized that "the world today is faced with new security threats, and technological transformation has made the situation highly complex and intricately connected."
He argued that adapting to this evolving environment requires a fresh approach and greater willingness to innovate jointly. Singh pointed to India's ongoing, unprecedented transformation in defence capabilities, suggesting that increased partnerships with German industry could yield substantial mutual benefits.
Complementary Strengths and Shared Opportunities
The Defence Minister acknowledged Germany's established industrial prowess while praising the dynamism of its Mittelstand—the network of small and medium-sized enterprises excelling in advanced and emerging technologies. He noted that India's own ecosystem is experiencing rapid growth, with startups and private companies enhancing the capabilities of larger defence enterprises.
"This is an area where India and Germany naturally complement each other, and our partnership can deepen further," Singh asserted, highlighting the synergistic potential between German technological expertise and India's innovative private sector.
Strategic Partnership and Global Challenges
Singh stressed the necessity of coordinated responses and trusted strategic partnerships to address modern global challenges. He referenced the strong emphasis placed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on advancing this strategic relationship.
He also noted growing convergence at the European Union level, reflected in increasing momentum to engage with India through mechanisms like the India-EU Defence and Strategic Partnership. "India and Germany are not only strategic partners but also consequential voices in shaping the global discourse of the present times," Singh stated.
Shared Values and Economic Resilience
The Defence Minister described both nations as established democracies bound by shared values and as dynamic economies driven by resilience, innovation, and determined industrial spirit. He appealed directly to the German lawmakers, saying their guidance and support could significantly enrich the future trajectory of defence and strategic cooperation.
Addressing Geopolitical Instability
Singh concluded by addressing contemporary geopolitical instability, arguing that such challenges can no longer be viewed as merely regional matters. He described their consequences as global in scope, with far-reaching implications for energy security, food security, and global economic stability, beyond the immediate humanitarian costs they entail.
His remarks positioned India and Germany as critical partners in navigating these complex global dynamics through enhanced technological and strategic collaboration.
