Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Embarks on Key Visit to Germany

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commenced an official three-day visit to Germany, starting Tuesday, aimed at fortifying the strategic defence partnership between India and Germany. This significant diplomatic mission underscores the growing importance of bilateral ties in the defence sector, with a focus on collaborative initiatives and mutual security interests.

High-Level Bilateral Talks and Submarine Deal Discussions

During his visit, Rajnath Singh is scheduled to hold comprehensive bilateral discussions with his German counterpart, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, along with other senior government officials. Although no official statement has been released, sources indicate that the talks are likely to center on the proposed Indo-German deal for constructing six next-generation conventional submarines in India under Project 75I (P-75I).

This submarine project, which has been under negotiation for an extended period, is estimated to cost India between Rs 70,000 crore and Rs 99,000 crore (approximately $8 to $12 billion). The submarines are expected to be built in India by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai, in collaboration with the German defence major Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, aligning with the Make-in-India initiative.

Focus on Defence Industrial Collaboration and Emerging Technologies

According to a release from the Indian Defence Ministry, the minister's discussions will prioritize enhancing defence industrial collaboration, strengthening military-to-military engagements, and exploring opportunities in emerging domains such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, and drones. The visit is anticipated to result in the signing of a defence industrial cooperation roadmap and an implementing arrangement for cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping operations training, to be formalized in the presence of both defence ministers.

Rajnath Singh's visit provides a crucial opportunity to review ongoing defence cooperation initiatives and identify new avenues for collaboration between the defence industries of both nations. He is also expected to engage with key representatives of the German defence industry to promote joint development and co-production under the Make-in-India framework.

Historical Context and Significance of the Visit

This visit marks the first by an Indian defence minister to Germany in seven years, with the last such visit conducted by Nirmala Sitharaman in February 2019. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had previously visited India in June 2023, where he held extensive talks with Rajnath Singh, setting the stage for this renewed engagement.

The discussions are set to cover a wide range of defence-related topics, reflecting the deepening strategic partnership between India and Germany. This visit is poised to not only advance specific projects like the submarine deal but also to foster long-term cooperation in defence technology and industrial synergy.
