Rajnath Singh in Berlin: India Open to Greater Global Conflict Mediation Role
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, emphasized that India has consistently upheld a balanced diplomatic stance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He left open the possibility of an expanded Indian role in resolving international conflicts, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Sharp Rebuke to Pakistan and Tribute to Pahalgam Victims
At an Indian community event hosted by the Indian embassy in the German capital, Singh paid homage to the victims on the first anniversary of the Pahalgam attack. During his address, he delivered a pointed rebuke to Pakistan, stating, "Our neighbours are more or less fine; there's just one problem, which you all know about. But if any neighbour now tries to mess around, then dot-dot-dot." This cryptic warning underscored India's firm stance on regional security issues.
Boosting Strategic Defence Partnership with Germany
Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius to enhance the strategic defence partnership between the two nations. The discussions covered a wide range of security and defence matters, with a focus on priority areas for co-development and co-production of defence equipment, particularly in niche technologies.
Key outcomes from the meeting included:
- The signing and exchange of a defence industrial cooperation roadmap.
- An implementing arrangement for cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping training.
- India's invitation for the German Air Force to participate in the next edition of Exercise TARANG SHAKTI, scheduled for September-October in India.
India's Diplomatic Efforts in Global Conflict Resolution
Addressing the Indian diaspora, Singh highlighted India's proactive efforts in conflict resolution. "India has tried... But everything has its time. It is possible that tomorrow, the time may come when India plays its role in this and achieves success as well. We cannot rule out this possibility," he remarked, referring to global crises. He noted that Prime Minister Modi has appealed to all sides to end wars and has personally engaged with leaders from conflict-affected nations to promote dialogue and peaceful solutions.
Specific diplomatic engagements cited by Singh:
- Discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on conflict resolution.
- Talks with former US President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need for a solution.
- India's successful diplomatic initiatives that secured passage for multiple Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz, showcasing its influence in maritime security.
This visit underscores India's growing diplomatic clout and its commitment to fostering international cooperation while maintaining a firm stance on national security concerns.
