Dibrugarh: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced that efforts are underway to transform Dibrugarh Airport into an international airport. He highlighted the city's strategic location and its proximity to Southeast Asian countries as key factors driving this initiative.
Strategic Location Advantage
Speaking at a press conference in Dibrugarh, Sonowal responded to a query by emphasizing the geographical advantage of the airport. "We are working on it. We are glad to have the strategic location advantage of Dibrugarh Airport. We are close to Southeast Asia, and in the near future, we are working towards developing it as an international airport," the minister stated.
Alignment with Act East Policy
The development of Dibrugarh Airport as an international facility is in line with the central government's Act East Policy. Under this policy, the northeast region has been positioned as India's gateway to Southeast Asia, enhancing connectivity and economic ties.
Sonowal's announcement underscores the government's commitment to bolstering infrastructure in the region. The move is expected to boost trade, tourism, and regional integration, leveraging Dibrugarh's proximity to countries like Myanmar, Thailand, and others in Southeast Asia.
