Indian Army's Southern Command Successfully Tests Long-Range BrahMos Missile
Southern Command Conducts Precision BrahMos Launch

In a significant demonstration of its precision strike capabilities, the Southern Command of the Indian Army has successfully test-fired a long-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The launch, conducted from a test range in the Bay of Bengal on Monday, marks a major step in enhancing India's deterrence posture.

Coordinated Mission Validates Missile Performance

The launch was a coordinated tri-services effort involving a BrahMos unit from the Southern Command and elements of the Andaman and Nicobar Command. According to an official release, the missile, equipped with advanced guidance and control systems, successfully engaged a designated target with pinpoint accuracy. The test validated the system's high-speed flight stability and terminal precision under simulated battle conditions, meeting all operational objectives.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, praised the successful combat launch. The achievement reaffirms the high state of operational readiness of the Army's BrahMos units and their capability to conduct real-time precision strikes against emerging battlefield threats.

A Milestone for Indigenous Defence Capabilities

This successful test is seen as a major milestone in the Indian Army's ongoing efforts to bolster its long-range precision strike capability. The release emphasized that the launch demonstrated the accuracy, reliability, and effectiveness of India's indigenous missile systems. It reflects steady progress in the nation's strategic and technological competencies, standing as a testament to India's commitment to self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The BrahMos Legacy: From Conception to Versatile Power

The BrahMos missile is a product of BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM). Its name is a portmanteau of the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. The entity was established with the mandate to design, develop, and manufacture this supersonic, high-precision cruise missile and its variants.

The missile's journey began with its first successful test on June 12, 2001, from a land-based launcher at the Integrated Test Range off the Chandipur coast in Odisha. Since then, it has seen induction across all three services:

  • Indian Navy: 2005
  • Indian Army: 2007
  • Indian Air Force: First successful air launch from a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter in 2017

Over the last 24 years, the BrahMos platform has evolved significantly. Beyond its basic land, air, sea, and submarine classifications, numerous versions with extended ranges and enhanced onboard sensing capabilities have been tested and deployed. This evolution has cemented BrahMos's reputation as one of the world's most versatile and potent missile systems.
