Sreekaryam Flyover Construction Advances as Key Step for Thiruvananthapuram Metro

In Thiruvananthapuram, the construction of the Sreekaryam flyover, a vital preparatory component for the proposed Metro rail system in the state capital, is progressing steadily. Authorities are focused on completing critical preliminary works ahead of the monsoon season to ensure timely project advancement.

Recent Progress and Upcoming Milestones

The project, executed by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), has seen significant headway in recent weeks. Tarring of one side of the service road was finished last week, and efforts are now concentrated on completing the remaining stretches of service roads. The contractor, Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd, is targeting the completion of these works before the onset of the monsoon.

However, officials have noted a delay in the commencement of piling work for the main flyover structure. This setback is due to ongoing pipeline-laying activities under the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme. Once these utility works are finalized, piling is expected to begin by June, marking a crucial phase in the construction timeline.

Integration with Broader Urban Mobility Plan

The Sreekaryam flyover project is an integral part of a larger urban mobility plan linked to the proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro. The Metro system, to be implemented by KMRL, is envisioned as a modern rapid transit network spanning multiple corridors across the city. This initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity, addressing long-standing urban challenges.

According to officials, foundational infrastructure works at Sreekaryam are nearing completion. "Drain construction and utility ducts have already been finished, while utility shifting activities are progressing. Earlier reports indicate that nearly 90% of stormwater drain work was completed as part of the initial phase," a source revealed.

Engineering Design and Future Expansion

The flyover is designed to integrate seamlessly with the future Metro corridor. Engineering plans include provisions for Metro pillars to be installed along the median, ensuring that the elevated road infrastructure can support future transit expansion without requiring major modifications. This forward-thinking design highlights the project's role in sustainable urban development.

Spanning 535 meters with 17 spans, the flyover will serve as a shared structure for both the flyover and the Metro rail corridor. The foundation stone for the flyover was laid in January 2025, marking the beginning of on-ground work after years of meticulous planning and preparation.

Broader Infrastructure Context and Funding

This project is part of a broader infrastructure push that includes similar flyovers at Pattom and Ulloor, aimed at decongesting some of the busiest stretches in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite procedural delays affecting the Metro's detailed project report (DPR), preparatory works like the Sreekaryam flyover are being pushed forward to maintain momentum. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is currently revising the DPR, incorporating alignment changes and updated technical assessments.

KMRL is executing the Rs 177 crore project, funded through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Of this total, Rs 71.38 crore was earmarked for the core structure. Land acquisition of 1.34 hectares, involving 168 properties across Cheruvakkal, Ulloor, and Pangappara, was completed in late 2024, with Rs 98 crore disbursed in compensation. A total of 168 buildings were demolished to make way for the project, underscoring the scale of urban transformation underway.
