Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has highlighted India’s diplomatic approach towards the Maldives, praising the humanitarian assistance extended during the island nation’s water crisis despite strained ties under President Mohamed Muizzu. Speaking at the Fletcher School, Tharoor emphasized that India built trust through actions, not rhetoric, citing New Delhi’s swift response after Male’s desalination plant failure.
Strategic Diplomacy in Action
Tharoor noted that India’s timely aid during the Maldives' water emergency exemplified how regional diplomacy can be effectively conducted through concrete assistance. He referenced the rapid deployment of water supplies and technical support following the breakdown of the desalination facility, which left the capital city facing a severe shortage of potable water.
Improving Bilateral Ties
The Congress leader observed that this humanitarian gesture helped lay the groundwork for subsequent improvements in bilateral relations. Ties between India and the Maldives had become strained under President Muizzu, who initially pursued a more pro-China stance. However, Tharoor pointed out that the relationship later improved following meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Muizzu, demonstrating how goodwill generated through aid can foster diplomatic breakthroughs.
Tharoor’s remarks at the Fletcher School underscored the importance of soft power and humanitarian outreach in India’s foreign policy toolkit. He argued that such actions not only address immediate crises but also build long-term trust and cooperation, serving as a model for strategic regional engagement.
