In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Latehar police arrested five individuals and detained a minor after recovering 5.73 grams of brown sugar from their possession on Thursday. The contraband was meticulously packed in 29 separate pouches, according to official sources.
Details of the Arrest
The five adult suspects, aged between 19 and 23 years, have been forwarded to judicial custody, while the minor has been sent to an observation home as per legal procedures. The arrests were made based on a specific tip-off received by the police.
Interception and Recovery
Sandip Kumar Gupta, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Latehar, stated that the six accused were traveling from Richughutta towards Latehar on three motorcycles when they were intercepted by the police team. During the search, the brown sugar was discovered. In addition to the drugs, the police seized three motorcycles, seven mobile phones, and Rs 14,140 in cash. All the accused are residents of Latehar district.
Legal Proceedings
The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the accused. Further investigations are underway to trace the source of the contraband and any possible links to larger drug networks.
