Thiruvananthapuram South Railway Station Redevelopment Nears Completion by Year-End

The ambitious redevelopment project of Thiruvananthapuram South railway station is advancing at a brisk pace, with railway authorities anticipating the completion of most major work components by the conclusion of this year. This significant infrastructure initiative, valued at Rs 117 crore, is set to transform the station into a modern hub, enhancing operational efficiency and passenger convenience across the region.

Rapid Progress on Terminal and Maintenance Facilities

According to a railway official, construction activities are proceeding rapidly to adhere to the established deadline. The platforms and shelters have already been finalized, while work on the terminal building is currently underway. Simultaneously, the development of pit lines and stabling lines, which are essential for inspecting and maintaining coaches, is taking shape effectively. These facilities are crucial for enabling the addition of more trains originating from the state capital and for operating an increased number of passenger trains along the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil southern route.

Track Doubling to Boost Connectivity

In a parallel development, track doubling efforts are being executed alongside the station redevelopment to ensure the station can function as a satellite terminal for the congested Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. The doubling work spanning the 55-kilometer stretch from Eraniel to Thiruvananthapuram is progressing in areas where land acquisition has been successfully completed. Notably, the track doubling between Nagercoil Town station and Eraniel within the Thiruvananthapuram Central–Kanniyakumari section has already been finished, with inspections of the track, electrical systems, and other engineering installations currently in progress.

Enhanced Commuter Benefits and Regional Impact

By the end of the year, the entire southern line is expected to be fully doubled, significantly easing the operation of additional trains to accommodate commuter traffic. This enhancement is particularly vital given the substantial number of individuals who travel between Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram for work and educational purposes. Moreover, many passengers rely on train services to reach Nagercoil to board connecting express trains, underscoring the project's importance in improving regional connectivity and travel efficiency.
