A former high-ranking Pentagon official has made a startling claim, suggesting that former US President Donald Trump should be credited—and even awarded a Nobel Prize—for his role in bringing India and Russia closer together. This unexpected analysis comes amidst the backdrop of the long-standing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Moscow, which was formalized in 2000 and elevated to a special and privileged status in 2010.
An Unexpected Nobel Nomination
In an interview with ANI on Saturday, Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official, presented a controversial perspective. He argued that President Trump's actions and approach inadvertently fostered a stronger bond between India and Russia. "From Russia's perspective, the visit is extremely positive, and India has bestowed honours on Vladimir Putin that he can hardly get anywhere else in the world," Rubin stated, referring to the Russian President's recent engagements in India.
He further elaborated, "I would actually argue that Donald Trump deserves a Nobel Prize for bringing India and Russia together the way he did." This comment adds a new dimension to Trump's known aspiration for the Nobel Peace Prize, a dream previously thwarted by the Swedish committee. Notably, several leaders, including from Israel, have nominated him for the 2026 prize.

When questioned about how Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India is perceived within American policy circles, Rubin described a split in viewpoints. He outlined two primary narratives shaping the analysis in Washington.
The first perspective is framed through a pro-Trump lens. According to Rubin, this view operates on an "I told you so" basis. It posits that India's warm embrace of Russia validates Trump's foreign policy stance and spin. In this narrative, Trump would not admit any fault, instead seeing the strengthened India-Russia axis as a confirmation of his strategic predictions.
The second, contrasting view is held by Trump's critics. Rubin pointed out that for the approximately 65% of Americans who view Trump unfavorably, as per recent polls, the current state of India-Russia relations is a direct result of what they see as "Donald Trump's gross incompetence" during his tenure. "How many of these agreements (MoUs) are actually gonna come to fruition?" he asked.
