US Envoy Wraps Up Strategic India Visit, Advocates for Enhanced Military Collaboration
US Under Secretary of War for Policy, Elbridge Colby, has concluded his official visit to India, marking a significant step in strengthening the defence partnership between the two nations. The high-level trip, which began on Tuesday and ended on Thursday, focused on advancing key elements of the 2026 National Defence Strategy and deepening bilateral military ties.
High-Level Consultations and Strategic Discussions
During his stay in New Delhi, Under Secretary Colby engaged in extensive consultations with senior Indian officials. He held meetings with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, fostering dialogue on regional security and global cooperation. A pivotal moment of the visit was Colby co-chairing the 18th US-India Defence Policy Group meeting alongside Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
This gathering advanced the Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership, a landmark agreement signed in October 2025 by US War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The framework aims to expand operational coordination, enhance information sharing, and boost defence industrial, science, and technology collaboration, as confirmed by Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell in an official statement.
Emphasis on Indo-Pacific Stability and Shared Convictions
At the Ananta Centre in New Delhi, Under Secretary Colby delivered remarks highlighting the durability of the India-US partnership. He outlined a strategic framework to guide defence cooperation, emphasizing that both countries benefit from an Indo-Pacific region where no single power can dominate. Colby reaffirmed the US belief in India's central role in maintaining a favourable balance of power.
"India is a republic of continental scale, with a proud strategic tradition. Its decisions will profoundly shape the future of the Indo-Pacific and the international landscape," Colby stated. He added, "Our two countries differ in history, geography, and perspective, yet we share a fundamental conviction: that the future of Asia should be determined by sovereign nations able to chart their own course."
Defence Deals and Procurement Discussions
The Defence Policy Group meeting also delved into ongoing defence deals, showcasing practical steps towards enhanced military cooperation. Key topics included:
- India's plans to acquire six additional P-8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
- Procurement of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles through an emergency route.
- Discussions on Excalibur precision-guided artillery ammunition, for which India has signed a Rs 300-crore deal under emergency procurement.
According to the US Department of War, Colby's visit represents a significant effort in operationalising high-level agreements between India and the United States. It advances the goals established by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi in their February 2025 joint statement, paving the way for a more integrated defence partnership.
The visit also included consultations with US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor, ensuring a coordinated approach to regional diplomacy. This comprehensive engagement underscores the growing strategic alignment between India and the US, with defence cooperation at its core, aimed at fostering stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
