The letter, signed by eight members of the US Congress including Representatives Jim McGovern and Jamie Raskin, was addressed to Ambassador Vinay Kwatra. The core issue highlighted is the prolonged pre-trial detention of individuals charged in relation to the communal violence that shook Delhi in February 2020. This episode resulted in 53 fatalities and left more than 700 individuals injured.
Umar Khalid, along with several others, faces serious allegations of being a mastermind behind the riots. He has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, alongside relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The lawmakers noted that Khalid has been held without bail for five years, a point of contention for numerous human rights organizations and legal experts.
