US Treasury Secretary Reinforces Trump's Greenland Ambitions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has strongly endorsed President Donald Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland. He argues that Europe cannot ensure its own security independently and must depend on the United States for protection.

Europe's Weakness Versus US Strength

In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Bessent downplayed European opposition to Trump's position. He emphasized that Washington is ready to use strategic pressure to accomplish its objectives.

"Europeans project weakness, US projects strength," Bessent told the news outlet. He clarified that Trump's stance is not a mere bargaining tactic. The president firmly believes Greenland's strategic value is crucial for enhanced security.

Bessent predicted that European leaders will eventually accept this reality. "The European leaders will come around and they will understand that they need to be under the US security umbrella," he stated.

Trade Deal Threats Dismissed as Leverage

Bessent also addressed threats from the European Union to halt a trade agreement made with the Trump administration last year. He pointed out that the deal has not been finalized yet.

"First of all, the trade deal hasn't been finalized, and an emergency action can be very different from another trade deal," Bessent explained. He added that Trump utilizes his emergency powers to advance these goals.

On Saturday, Trump announced new tariffs on goods from eight European countries. These tariffs start at 10% on February 1 and increase to 25% in June. The move aims to push for a deal that includes the "purchase of Greenland."

This development highlights ongoing tensions between the US and Europe over security and trade matters.
