Indian Railways Greenlights Vande Bharat Sleeper for Bengaluru-Mumbai Corridor
Train travel between Bengaluru and Mumbai is poised for a significant upgrade, with Indian Railways officially approving the introduction of a Vande Bharat sleeper service on this crucial route. This development promises to deliver a faster and more comfortable journey for passengers commuting between these two major economic hubs.
Official Approval and Anticipated Details
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has formally communicated the approval for the new sleeper train to Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan via an official letter. While the specific route, intermediate stops, exact travel time, and official launch date are yet to be finalized and announced, sources confirm that the project is now moving forward. This follows a report by The Times of India on January 6, which indicated that the Railways was actively considering this proposal.
The Current Rail Link: Udyan Express
Currently, the primary rail connection between Mumbai and Bengaluru is the Udyan Express, which was introduced back in 1983. Despite technological advancements over the decades, this service continues to operate on relatively slow tracks, taking more than 22 hours to cover the considerable distance of 1,139 kilometers. In contrast, bus journeys on this route take approximately 16 hours, highlighting the need for a faster rail alternative.
It is important to note that sources have clarified the planned Vande Bharat service will not replace the existing Udyan Express. Instead, it will serve as a complementary, premium option for travelers seeking reduced travel time and enhanced comfort.
Proposed Route and Technical Feasibility
Sources within Central Railway have indicated that the new Vande Bharat sleeper service is likely to follow the route taken by the Udyan Express. This would include stops via Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal. The selection of this path is strategic, as a Vande Bharat train is already operational on the Mumbai-Solapur segment, suggesting established operational familiarity.
Officials have also confirmed that there are no technical constraints to operating a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat trains on this corridor, paving the way for a smooth implementation.
Public Demand and Commuter Expectations
MP PC Mohan emphasized that travelers between Bengaluru and Mumbai have long been demanding a faster and more convenient train service. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the commuting public, who are eagerly inquiring about potential stops and whether the train will route via Kalaburagi or Hubballi.
Trade activist Sajjan Raj Mehta welcomed the move, stating, "It's a welcome move. In the absence of a superfast train, many travellers have to rely on buses or expensive air travel. Bus journeys take 14-15 hours. The new train service should aim to keep travel time within 16 to 17 hours for the larger benefit of passengers."
This sentiment underscores the key expectation: reducing the rail travel time to compete with road transport, ideally targeting a duration of 16 to 17 hours, thereby offering a compelling alternative to both lengthy bus rides and costlier air travel.
