Vijayapura Airport Awaits Supreme Court Verdict, Minister Expresses Confidence in Swift Launch

Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil has confirmed that hearings in environment-related cases, including the crucial Vijayapura airport project, have concluded in the Supreme Court. The verdict is now awaited, with Patil expressing strong confidence that flight operations will commence immediately upon a favorable order.

Airport Construction Complete, Awaiting Operational Clearance

Patil stated that the airport construction is fully complete, and an application has been formally submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for operational clearance. The minister personally met with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav to seek necessary approvals, emphasizing the state's commitment to the project.

Environmental Clearance Challenges and Legal Proceedings

The minister noted that when the project began in 2021-22, environmental clearance from the Union government had not been obtained. The process to secure approvals only started after the current state government assumed office. Meanwhile, Chennai-based environmental organization Vanashakti moved the Supreme Court seeking a halt to projects launched without prior environmental clearance.

After hearing the petition, the court ordered a halt and cancellation of such projects. Although the Vijayapura airport was not directly named, the Centre's environment ministry later denied clearance citing this ruling. Patil highlighted that a strong legal team, including Kapil Sibal, Devatta Kamat, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, and Additional Advocate General Nishant Patil, argued the case effectively.

Supreme Court Review and Nationwide Implications

The Supreme Court later agreed to review its earlier order and heard stakeholders from similar projects nationwide. The verdict is now reserved, with Patil optimistic about a positive outcome. He emphasized that the court's decision will have significant implications for infrastructure projects across India facing similar environmental hurdles.

Additional Funding and Enhanced Infrastructure

The state government has released an additional Rs 220 crore for the Vijayapura airport project. This funding covers crucial infrastructure elements including:

  • Approach roads for improved access
  • Advanced fire safety systems
  • Night landing capabilities

The airport is now fully equipped to handle large aircraft, marking a significant upgrade in regional aviation infrastructure.

Airline Engagement and Regional Connectivity Plans

Patil revealed that two rounds of talks have been held with airline operators to begin services linking Vijayapura with Bengaluru and other major cities. Airlines have responded positively to the proposals. Once operational, the airport is expected to dramatically boost connectivity across the Kittur Karnataka region, facilitating economic growth and tourism.

The minister concluded by reiterating his confidence in the project's success, stating that all necessary preparations are complete and only the final legal and regulatory approvals remain pending.
