Six Wild Buffaloes Killed by Election Special Train in Assam's Hill Section

In a tragic incident that has sparked renewed safety concerns, six wild buffaloes were killed on Sunday after being struck by a Guwahati-Badarpur election special train in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway. This marks the second such collision involving wildlife in less than a week, highlighting ongoing challenges in this ecologically sensitive region.

Details of the Collision

The Railway Protection Force in Haflong reported that the accident occurred at the 112-kilometer mark between Jatinga and New Harangajao stations. According to officials, a herd of buffaloes strayed onto the railway tracks, leaving the loco pilot with insufficient time to respond or brake effectively.

"All six animals died on the spot due to the severe impact of the collision," a source from the RPF stated. "Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the passengers or railway staff aboard the election special train."

Recurring Incidents and Safety Concerns

This latest tragedy follows a similar incident on April 6, when the 13173 Down Kanchanjunga Express hit a herd of buffaloes inside Tunnel No. 16 near New Haflong station in Dima Hasao. That collision resulted in the deaths of eight buffaloes and injuries to three others.

The repeated accidents have intensified worries about track safety and carcass management in the hill section. Local residents and animal rights activists have pointed to inadequate preventive measures as a primary cause.

"The absence of proper fencing and digital surveillance along these vulnerable stretches makes it easy for cattle and wildlife to wander onto the tracks," a local resident explained. "These are recurring tragedies that could be prevented with better infrastructure and monitoring systems."

Potential Railway Response

In response to the incidents, railway authorities are reportedly considering several measures to enhance safety in animal-prone zones. Sources indicate that a review of monitoring protocols is likely, with potential actions including:

  • Implementation of speed restrictions in identified high-risk corridors
  • Installation of additional barriers and fencing along vulnerable sections
  • Enhanced surveillance systems to detect wildlife movement near tracks
  • Improved coordination with local communities and forest departments

The Northeast Frontier Railway has faced increasing pressure to address these safety gaps, particularly in regions where wildlife habitats intersect with railway infrastructure. The ecological sensitivity of the Lumding-Badarpur section adds complexity to implementing effective solutions that balance transportation needs with wildlife protection.

As investigations continue, the back-to-back incidents have underscored the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures to prevent further loss of wildlife and ensure passenger security on this important railway route through Assam's challenging terrain.
